We explain everything you need to know about the new AI feature from Coinbase and Base.

Developers of the Ethereum L2 network Base, built by Coinbase, have launched Base MCP. The tool integrates crypto wallets with popular AI assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and others. Users can now manage assets directly from chat.

How Does Base MCP Work?

Through a simple text request, an AI agent can:

  • Transfer funds
  • Swap tokens
  • Check balances and transaction history
  • Interact with DeFi protocols including Uniswap, Morpho, Moonwell, Avantis, and others

A key security feature: the AI does not have access to private keys. The agent only suggests an action, after which a Base Wallet window opens for manual user confirmation. A simulation of changes is shown before confirmation.

Connection to x402 and Outlook

Base MCP also expands the use of the x402 protocol, a payment standard for AI agents launched by Coinbase in 2025. According to x402scan, transaction volume through the protocol over the last 30 days was only $1.1M. This indicates that the agentic payment market is still in its early stages.

Coinbase calls the new tool an important step toward simplifying on-chain interactions.

“Instead of forcing users to jump between applications, Base MCP allows the agent to help in a convenient format,” the company noted.

Risks and Security

Despite enthusiasm, experts warn of threats. A recent study by Google and leading universities recommends treating AI agents as imperfect, underdeveloped systems. Additionally, the TrapDoor malicious campaign, discovered this week, uses hidden instructions to hack developer AI assistants.

Base MCP is Coinbase’s first significant step toward AI-native crypto interfaces. If the tool gains popularity, it could significantly simplify mass adoption of cryptocurrencies and DeFi.
