Why Governor Newsom Is Betting on AI in the Public Sector

Gavin Newsom said, “AI should not replace human work in government. It should help employees work faster, solve problems more efficiently, and deliver better results for the people of California.

The deal continues Newsom’s push for AI in the public sector, which began in 2023 with an order to study generative AI use. In 2025, he signed a directive on government efficiency measures, and in March 2026, he ordered an update to AI procurement rules to account for civil rights, privacy, and worker risks.
