Circle Unveils Roadmap to Shield Arc Blockchain From Quantum Threats

The main goal is transitioning to post-quantum encryption standards before the so-called “Q-Day” arrives.

Circle has published a detailed strategy for protecting its own Layer-1 blockchain, Arc, from threats posed by the development of quantum computers.

Circle noted that the moment when quantum computers can break modern cryptography could arrive as early as 2030. Transaction signatures, wallets, and network authentication mechanisms would then be at risk.

Arc Roadmap

Arc launched its public testnet in October 2025 with backing from BlackRock, Visa, and Mastercard. The blockchain plans to implement quantum protection in stages:

  1. At mainnet launch — introduce post-quantum signatures, allowing users to create quantum-resistant wallets on an optional basis.
  2. Short-term — protect private balances, transactions, and recipient data.
  3. Medium-term — upgrade all infrastructure, including HSM modules, cloud environments, and protocols like TLS 1.3.
  4. Long-term — strengthen validator security and the consensus mechanism.

Importantly, the migration will be voluntary. The company has refused to force a network upgrade.

Why This Matters for the Market

Circle emphasizes that most existing blockchains lack a realistic transition plan to post-quantum cryptography. This creates systemic risks. Public keys could be compromised. Asset migration, such as Bitcoin UTXOs, could take months. Post-quantum signatures are significantly larger in size, complicating scalability.

Google Quantum AI has also warned that quantum computers could break modern cryptography sooner than expected. For institutional investors, resilience to quantum threats is becoming an increasingly important factor when choosing blockchain infrastructure.
