To use the feature, users must connect their Starbucks account in the ChatGPT catalog. They simply type @Starbucks followed by their request. The chatbot not only recommends a drink but also assists with customization. However, purchases must still be completed through the main Starbucks app or website.

According to Starbucks Senior Vice President of Digital Technology and Loyalty Paul Riedel, customers increasingly arrive not with a specific menu choice but with a particular mood or desire. The new feature aims to make the selection process simpler and more personalized.

Development Context

The launch of the app within ChatGPT continues Starbucks’ strategy of integrating artificial intelligence. The company previously used the Green Dot Assist AI helper to help baristas prepare drinks, troubleshoot equipment, and manage staff scheduling.

The new feature is currently only available to users in the United States. The company has not yet announced plans for expansion to other countries.
